Election 1940: Indiana Bars Communists From Vote (10-8-40)

The Pittsburgh Press (October 8, 1940)

Indianapolis, Oct. 8 –

The State Board of Election Commissioners today decide to ban the Communist Party from the ballot in the November 5 elections because the board believes the party advocates overthrow of the government by force and because signatures on its petition were ruled invalid.

Is this The Smith Act at work?

Most definitely, though somewhat shady.
