Editorial: Shades of Bryan!
An “acting” president? Thomas L. Stokes points out in his column that that’s the next development to look for.
Radio, he reminds us, gave President Roosevelt a big edge, with a network voice that was a natural.
Now television looms on the horizon, so presidents and presidential prospects will have to learn to act, and to smile pleasantly, as well as speak properly into the microphone.
“Shades of William Jennings Bryan!” exclaims Mr. Stokes, recalling how the great orator was able to charm audiences, to the very last row, without the help of mechanical contrivances.
But remember, Mr. Stokes, Mr. Bryan never got elected, either.
