Editorial: Here come the brides
Hello, you brides from England. Nice to have you. We like your sense of fitness – your singing “There’ll Always Be an England” as you sailed, then our national anthem at the New York pier. Understand you girls are strong on common sense. Well, come right in. People with common sense love this country.
They love the Statue of Liberty you passed in the harbor. The cities with their towering masonry. The trails leading westward over gentle mountains to the Midwest plains. In the Midwest you travel countless miles past secure houses and big barns; past woods that dream in the sun, and fields that pulse with the growth of food. People love the challenging barriers of the Rockies, where beauty and grandeur bring an ache to your throat. They love the Pacific strip, with its mothering forests in the north and its warm abundance in the south, that incredible south between the peaks and the sea.
Wives of our fighting men, you are welcome here: you and your babies who now may have fresh eggs, oranges, milk – oh, there never was a place so rich as this land can be. You’ll love it, too.
