During the war did Allied soldiers have any say in where they were sent?

Could a British or American soldier request to serve in North Africa, Europe or elsewhere? Could they serve in specific divisions or units of their own choosing?

I don’t think so, not in the war, anyway. In peacetime, people did change regiment, in the British Army, anyway.

Nope. When you get right down to it, you serve at the pleasure of the President in the US, or Comrade Stalin, or the Emperor, or the King. You can ask, volunteer, or demand an assignment, but if they say take this rifle and take that hill, that’s your lot.

As others have said you are in essence an employee of your countries government and if your government chooses to send your unit to Timbuktu then you ain’t got a say in it. You get to go to Timbuktu
