For Christians it would seem a logical conclusion to see Adolf Hitler as the Antichrist. But did many people actually link Hitler to the number 666, which is the number of the beast in Revelation 13: 18?

No. There was a theme of shared beliefs in US material in order to decrease antisemitism and anti-Catholic sentiment in the military, which culminated in congress giving a special medal to the 4 chaplains. (they ended up being featured in a lot of religion driven propaganda in the US)
Vis a Vis Germany
The Catholic Church gets dragged on its response. Actions of individual churches, monasteries/nunneries, dioceses were sometimes exemplary, sometimes not.
The Confession Lutherans as evangelicals during this period deserve more dragging. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was the exception, not the rule. They brought back the worst of Martin Luther’s antisemitic preaching and actively allowed themselves to be cooped. They actively framed Hilter as a friend to the church. (there’s a whole set of books on the subject by Robert Ericksen, who also is a lay deacon? I believe in a Lutheran church. he decided to study theology in Germany during the holocaust because he is actively Christian and was out of ideas for his PhD…)
