Post-colonial African politics are utterly depressing. Whilst our friend Mr. Nguema is undoubtedly one of the worst, there are few who were significantly better.

My wife has an ancestor called Sir Milton Margai (link) who was the first prime minister of Sierra Leone who actually seems to have made a fairly decent fist of things. There’s a school for the blind named after him apparently as well as a teacher training college. Sadly, when he died his brother took over and the usual depressing downward spiral or corruption, incompetence and civil war ensued. It’s still a pretty cool piece of family history though.

Slightly ironically, an ancestor on my side of the family, private John William Fielding was given a VC at the battle of Rorke’s Drift.
