TIME DESIGNATES CHURCHILL 1940 ‘MAN OF THE YEAR’
New York, Jan. 2 (UP) –
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was designated “man of the year” for 1940 by Time Magazine today. The designation is given annually to “the man or woman who has affected the most dramatic change in the course of history during the past 12 months.”
The “obvious” United States candidate for the title, the magazine said, was President Roosevelt for his third term victory, but his “other accomplishments of 1940 were not breathtaking.”
Republican presidential nominee Wendell Willkie performed “more strikingly,” Time said, but did not succeed in “leading his crusade to victory.”
