Bowles announces he is candidate for Connecticut governor

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – Ending several weeks of speculation, Chester Bowles, former national OPA chief and economic stabilizer, today announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor of Connecticut.

Mr. Bowles, stating that his decision “has not been easy,” declared, “I’m deeply convinced that the election this fall will mark a turning point in our history.

“As I see it,” he said “the vote of our citizens in November – both here in Connecticut and throughout the nation – will decide whether we are to move ahead to ever greater heights of prosperity for all of our people, to a future free from want and free from fear – or whether we are to repeat the same old dreary cycle of inflationary booms followed by economic heartbreak and depression.”

Mr. Bowles’ formal announcement came only a few hours after a rally here of Democratic party leaders in which he was a center of attention and had promised to “make my position known” on Tuesday.

The party’s state convention will be held next Monday and Tuesday at Hartford.

Two others seek the same nomination, Lt. Gov. Wilbert Snow, a Wesleyan University professor, and Thomas J. Dodd, U.S. prosecutor in the Nuernberg war guilt trials.
