BIG TAX MEASURE AWAITS SIGNATURE

Washington, Sept. 18 (UP) –
The record-smashing $3,553,400,000 defense tax bill was on President Roosevelt’s desk today awaiting his signature.

Coincidentally, Chairman Walter F. George (D-GA) of the Senate Finance Committee predicted that the government would be forced to levy new taxes next year in addition to the measure just passed.

Senator George foresaw not only a search for additional revenue but consideration of another boost in the statutory debt limit, now fixed at $65 billion.

Last hurdle to enactment of the present giant measure was cleared yesterday by the Senate, which approved, without record vote, a compromise program submitted by conferres of the two houses. The House approved the report Tuesday.
