Bastille Day fetes banned by Germans
New York (UP) ā (July 11)
The anniversary of the fall of the Paris Bastille on July 14, 1789, which in France is symbolical of the overthrow of despotism, will not be celebrated in occupied France this year under orders of German occupation authorities.
The BBC, in a broadcast recorded in New York, said the Paris radio explained there would be no celebration because:
France is still in national mourning.
