The public debt has passed the $44,000,000,000 mark, Treasury figures showed today. Indebtedness as of September 16 was $44,061,821,728.45.
The debt increase brought the government close to its statutory general-purpose borrowing limit of $45,000,000,000. Additional authority to borrow $4,000,000,000 for defense purposes only has been granted by Congress.
