American-owned ship sunk on way to Britain

New York, Oct. 23 (UP) –
Maritime circles said today it had been confirmed that the American-owned tanker W C Teagle was sunk in the North Atlantic last week while sailing under the British flag in a convoy bound for Great Britain.

The U.S. Maritime Commission, however, refused to discuss the 9,552-ton tanker’s fate on the grounds that, technically speaking, it was a British ship. Presumably its crew of 35 to 40 men was non-American too.

The ship was sunk, according to its owners, during its first voyage under the British flag. Details were lacking.
