FRANCE: Germans mount bitter attacks with reinforced armor in battle for Normandy’s inland port of Caen. British and Americans beat off repeated assaults, and advance within two and a half miles of Saint-Lô.

RUSSIA: British radio says Soviet troops have surrounded Minsk, cutting leading rail and road routes to Warsaw.

ITALY: Allied forces continue northward advance toward Livorno, Pisa and Siena. Germans fall back across Musone River on Adriatic Coast.

ASIA: U.S. Liberators based in China bomb docks and harbor at Takao, in southwestern tip of Formosa. Japanese continue siege of Hengyang. Chinese gain in North Burma.

PACIFIC: U.S. Army and Marine forces press forward on Saipan, where 9,752 U.S. casualties already suffered since the landings. Yap and other Jap-held islands bombed by MacArthur’s fliers.
