WPB penalty called ‘summary’ by Pew

Washington (UP) –
J. Howard Pew, president of the Sun Oil Co. said today his company “can accept no blame” for alleged violation of gasoline delivery orders for which it was penalized by the War Production Board yesterday.

The WPB cut the company’s deliveries here on charges it had sold more than its quota of gasoline.

Mr. Pew said:

The Sun Oil Co. is surprised at the summary action of the War Production Board. It seems needless to say that the Sun Oil Co. would not intentionally violate any government war order. This entire matter hinges upon an academic interpretation of a clause… requiring special consideration of dealers under unusual circumstances.

We can accept no blame as the Washington authorities were thoroughly familiar with the situation at all times and our company repeatedly pressed for a specific interpretation.

Mr. Pew said the company would comply with the WPB order without challenging its legality.

He said:

Times are too serious for academic squabbles.

Right - the old guys could not solve the problems between the countries, so why not send our youth to kill each other. The concept of war is really vicious.

Communiqué No. 164

South Pacific.
No report of any material change in the military situation in the Solomon Islands has been received. On October 20, a minor enemy thrust against the western flank of our troop position on Guadalcanal was repulsed.

During the night of October 20-21, an enemy bomber was shot down over Guadalcanal. The bomber, which is believed to have been on a reconnaissance mission, was destroyed by anti-aircraft fire.

Our aircraft continue active in seeking out and bombing enemy troop and supply concentrations on Guadalcanal Island.
