FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover today warned Selective Service registrants that federal and local officers had begun a drive to enforce the requirement that registration cards be carried at all times.

Roosevelt to speak on domestic issues

Washington (UP) – (Oct. 10)
President Roosevelt plans to devote a major part of the weekend to preparation of his Monday night fireside chat.

All Pittsburgh stations will broadcast the address at 10 p.m. Monday.

Although Mr. Roosevelt has declined to announce the topic of his speech, it is expected to deal largely with domestic issues including the economic stabilization program and the manpower problem.

New Orleans, Louisiana – (Oct. 10)
Mrs. J. M. Schelling, wife of the Navy supervisor at Orange, Texas, will sponsor the USS Lucien Young when the destroyer is launched at Orange tomorrow by the Consolidated Steel Corp.

24,249 more get Army commissions

Washington (UP) –
Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson reported to Congress today that between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30, the Army commissioned directly from civilian life 24,249 persons without previous military experience.

Mr. Stimson said that 16,116, or 66.5%, were physicians and other members of the medical profession who were assigned to the Medical Department.

The breakdown by rank of the new officers:
*Colonels, five

  • Lieutenant-colonels, 64
  • Majors, 810
  • Captains, 4,260
  • First lieutenants, 9,585
  • Second lieutenants, 9,525.
