U.S. bomber destroys four Jap planes at Wake

HQ, Hawaiian Air Force (AP) –
An American Flying Fortress on a secret mission to Japanese-held Wake Island destroyed four of six Japanese planes which rose to attack it and returned to its base with three bullet holes as the only damage.

A fifth enemy plane was probably destroyed and the sixth, which followed the Fortress to a point 150 miles from Wake, was given only a 50-50 chance to make its way back to its base because of the prevailing bad weather.

U.S. fliers hit airport of Japs near Canton

Chungking (AP) –
United States Army bombers attacked a Japanese airdrome near Canton yesterday, destroying at least ten grounded enemy planes, Lt. Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell’s Headquarters announced today.

All of the American planes, including bombers and fighter escort, returned safely to their bases.

Car loadings up 0.9% in week

Washington (AP) –
The Association of American Railroads reported today that 863,528 cars of revenue freight were loaded during the week ending last Saturday.

This was an increase of 8,006 cars, or 0.9%, compared with the preceding week: A decrease of 18,494 cats, or 2.1%, compared with a year ago, and an increase of 145,601 cars, or 20.3%, compared with 1940.
