More than once during the 24 hours, it’s been mentioned that history has evolved from what Max Hastings wrote about. I have one of his books…
So, what is a good modern book about D-Day and the later battle for the Cotentin Peninsula?

For reference, Max Hastings’ book on D-Day came out in 1984.
I liked D-Day: The Battle for Normandy by Anthony Beever, which came out in 2009. It actually covers everything from D-Day until the liberation of Paris, which is some good context. However, the tradeoff is that only the first third of the book actually covers June 6 and there’s very little about the preparation for the invasion.
Neptune: Allied Invasion of Europe and the The D-Day Landings by Craig Symonds from 2014 seems more focused on June 6th and has good reviews, but I haven’t read it myself.
I think I would lean toward the 2014 release based on some of the comments in the 24 hours. Some of the info they were talking about was reportedly released in 2008-09, which would have missed a 2009 book.
But I also want to keep this topic high to allow others to think about it.
