ALIEN SEAMEN SEIZED IN NINE PORT CITIES

Washington, May 17 (UP) –
Maj. Lemuel Schofield, head of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, said tonight agents are taking into custody an unestimated number of seamen charged with overstaying 60-day leaves in the United States.

Maj. Schofield said arrests are being made in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Miami, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

He described it as a continuation of the roundup of May 7, when more than 150 German seamen were taken into custody.

The immigration head said seamen involved in tonight’s roundup were of “all nationalities.”
