A worker at a plutonium processing plant is purposefully contaminated, psychologically tortured and possibly murdered to prevent her from exposing worker safety violations at the plant.
An early report on Silkwood’s death…
The Daily Oklahoman (November 15, 1974)
Atom plant worker dies in traffic
CRESCENT – A woman killed near here in a traffic crash Wednesday night was one of two exposed to radioactive plutonium last week, a Kerr-McGee Corp. spokesman said Thursday.
Karen G. Silkwood, 28, of 836 NW 48 in Oklahoma City, was identified as one of two women who worked at a Kerr-McGee nuclear plant near Crescent where they became contaminated.
Articles contaminated with radioactive plutonium were found at the Edmond apartment of the other woman, whose identity has not been disclosed.
The articles were taken last week to the nuclear plant for proper disposal, a spokesman for the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) said.
Miss Silkwood was fatally injured when her southbound car veered left off SH 74 about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday and struck a concrete abutment a mile south of SH 33 in Logan County, the Highway Patrol said.
Authorities said it was coincidence that her death injury came a week after the exposure incident at the nuclear plant.
