Indeed, this was also the thinking that sunk Chamberlain’s policy. They assumed they were dealing with rational actors. Chamberlain remembered WW I and wanted to prevent that from happening again, Hitler remembered WW I and wanted a redo to reverse the result.

We can disagree but I’ll arrogantly proclaim that I’m right on this one. Actually, the sources that I read are more than likely right. Lots of Cold War propaganda claims that it isn’t so are all based on one specific account which turned out to be bogus.

Agree, the Cold War “history” was originally written by the surviving German Generals.

David M.Glantz uses the Soviet archives in the ninetees and came to much verifiably good conclusions. when Titans clashed is a good start point.
