@boemboemtsjak Great point. Japan needed colonies to build an impire as the British. But in 1941 the world was running short of vacant colonies. Britian and US had never hesitated in shopping new colonies by military force, so Japan in way just did what have been done for centuries. The were the only Asian nation to industrialize themselves, but when then arrived at the world stage, there were no more chairs at the table. So no doubt an outdated colony policy by several countries participated in the excalation that ended up in the Pearl Harbor attack

I think this assertion might be more compelling to some, less the 1930’s savage behavior of the Japanese in China, Korea and so on. Hitching to the Axis alliance has bad ‘optics’ for the Japanese as well…
